left moves SHRC against 'arbitrary' Posco land acquisition

PNS

A day after slamming the Government for its “arbitrary” and “undemocratic” attempt to suppress the anti-Posco movements and voice of local people, four political parties, the CPI(Ml), CPI(Ml) liberation, SUCI (Communist) and CPIMl-ND on Friday sought intervention of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) in the “forcible” land acquisition process at Govindpur village for the proposed Posco project in Jagatsinghpur district.

“The Jagatsinghpur district administration has demolished 25 betel vines at Govindpur in last 10 days without taking the consent of the betel vine owners. Similarly, the administration has also set up a police camp at Mangalpada in the middle of Govindpur since February 3 and deployed 15 platoons of police forces thereby creating an atmosphere of fear among the villagers which amounts violation of human rights,” said the petition filed by the four parties.

They also alleged that while at least 77 persons do not want to give their betel vines at Govindpur, the administration is trying its best to acquire the lands.

Hence, the  State Human Rights Commission (SHRC)  has been moved to intervene in the matter immediately and ensure justice to the affected people, they said.
