Lectures sans sound system an odd class

DINESH DAS

--Let each college have sound system to aid teaching: Lectures delivered in large classrooms attended by a large number of students may not be audible to all if the help of a sound system is not taken. The students would find the class to be boring and may be discouraged to attend such a class.

So, be it a Government, aided and private college, delivery of lectures without the aid of sound systems is not a perfect class by which teaching - learning procedure is badly affected. In Odisha, the higher secondary schools and colleges mostly are deficient of adequate infrastructure like class rooms. So, large numbers of students, about 100 to 300, sit to avail classroom teaching from senior teachers whose age might be over 50 years. The lectures are most often not audible to the students in a class.

For more efficiency in presentation of teaching, there is a provision to divide students into small groups and take class in small halls group wise. But for this to happen, the colleges need to have sufficient class rooms and manpower. However, in Odisha, due to infrastructure and staff crunch, the colleges don't follow the system of Span of Control. This practice had been carried out for decades without any complaints from both the students and teachers, though.

Retired educationist Prof Dr Bijaya Kumar Satpathy said that the students of comparatively big classes could not be managed if the Lecturers are not provided with a microphone and sound system. If the Government would instruct the principals of such colleges to maintain a sound system in every class, the students could understand the lectures well.
