An undertrial prisoner hailing from Chhanda village under the Marshaghai police limits in Kendrapada district died at the Taloja Jail in Navi Mumbai on Thursday.
The deceased Batakrushna Swain was arrested by the Mumbai police on March 12 for his alleged involvement in ganja peddling. After rejection of his bail plea by a local court, he was lodged in the jail.
On June 20, his elder brother Rashmi Ranjan met him in the jail and had a conversation with him.
While Rashmi Ranjan was returning to Odisha by a train on June 21, he received a telephone call from an official of the jail informing him about the death of his younger brother and asked him to collect the body. The family members of Batakrushna have alleged that he was killed by jail staffs. They were not informed about the cause of the death, the kin of the deceased said.
