The police on Saturday night arrested jilted lover Banabihari Behera (35) of village Nipania under the Tamaka police station in Jajpur district on the charge of killing a 17-year-old college girl in front of several villagers on Friday, said Tamaka police station IIC Prafulla Kumar Singh.
Biswakalpita Behera, a Plus II Arts student, was repeatedly stabbed by Banabihari, a neighbour of the deceased girl, in broad daylight on the village road while she was on her way to college. The girl died on the spot. Her father Banambar Behera and other villagers stood dumbstruck even as Banabihari managed to flee from the village. The girl was stabbed on her heck, back, hip and face.
After raiding several hideouts, the police arrested Banabihari in Tamaka and seized the blood-soaked sharp weapon from him. On Sunday, he was produced in the court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) at Jajpur Road. The court rejected his bail application and remanded him to jail custody.
