The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action-taken report (ATR) from the Home Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) over the kidney theft racket within four weeks.
Acting on a complaint filed by Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain the commission has passed the order. Giving the instances of Padmini Nayak and Bulu Behera who have lost their kidney in a preplanned way at a private hospital, the petitioner alleged that the racket is working actively with the help of certain private and Govt hospitals and officers. She urged the commission to take up the issue seriously and pay `50 lakh compensation to the victims.
