About 50 elephants from the Dalma jungle of Jharkhand have now entered Mayurbhanj district. They were traced in the forests near Chitrada under Morada block of the district in the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. Their presence has created panic among the people of the nearby areas like Phulajhari, Malihata, Chikitamatia, Pattakundia, Ghaghara and Andhari.
latest reports reaching here say the herd of elephants which comprises quite a few calves is also moving a little slowly towards further interior areas of the district.
Efforts to send them back to Jharkhand have so far not yielded any positive result.
On the other hand, the elephants have already destroyed some houses and croplands and orchards like guava gardens and banana plantations. At least two persons have been injured due to their attack.
As the people are panicky, some roads in the nearby areas now wear a deserted look. According to Rasgovindpur Forest Range Officer Dilip Barik, Forest Department employees are now trying their best to control the movement of the elephants.
