Joda to have first solid waste project in State

RAJENDRA SAHU

The Joda civic body under Keonjhar district will be privileged to have the first solid waste management (SWM) project in the State. This was declared by Urban and Housing Department Additional Secretary Sharada Prasad Panda in a meeting held at Joda on Friday.

Sources revealed that the National Green Tribunal, Delhi ,in its orders 606/ 2018, had directed all the State Governments and Union Territories to implement the Solid Waste Management Rules-16 as mandatory which implies upon all the Municipal/Notified Area Council authorities for systematic management and disposal of the garbage / waste within a time-bound programme.

The Tribunal has further directed the Chief Secretary of the States and UTs to have consultation over the matter at least once in a month with the respective District Magistrate.

After the SWM pilot project will be inaugurated on the coming  Independence Day, no person or institution can throw, burn or bury the solid waste generated by him or it on the street, public places, outside his premises, on the drain or flowing water.

Rather they will hand over the segregated  waste being wrapped over properly to the waste collector or the authorised persons for the same. And the municipal authority will dispose the total collected wastes in the prescribed  scientific manner so that the recycled  wastes  can again  be better  reused for different purposes like organic compost for agriculture. Dry waste can be sold to kabadiwallas.

Among others, Joda civic body EO Suryamani Patjoshi and Public Health Officer Rajendra Kumar Mishra were present. Patjoshi issued a notice to Tata Steel which is a bulk waste generator as per Rule-16 to set up its own SWM plant to implement the NGT orders.
