A team of experts from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras would visit the Shree Jagannath Temple here soon to conduct a structural survey over reported tremor threat to the 12th-Century shrine.

The team is scheduled to make an inspection of the Nata Mandap and the Jagamohan to assess which intensity of tremor can be withstand by the temple.

According to reports, the temple is having a big threat from both natural and manmade tremors and vibration.

The Earth’s plate under the Bay of Bengal is movable and is constantly expanding and squeezing, resulting in a change in the structure of the Jagannath temple, said International Geologist Prof Manmohan Mohanty.

The structural change resulted from the movement of the plate under the sea can’t be seen, but that affects the entire structure of the temple. Besides, the earthquake also erupts in the sea frequently, he said.

Apart from the earthquake, huge mansions around the shrine, high-decibel musical sounds also impacts the Shreemandir, said Prof Mohanty.
