'If I'm alive, it's because of yoga practice'

The Academy of Yoga and Oriental Studies (AYOS) organised a seminar on “My experience with yoga” to mark the International Yoga Day here.

The meeting was presided over by AYOS director Dr Indulata Das. Sanskrit scholar and firmer IPS officer Arun Kumar Upadhyaya was the chief guest and yoga expert and retired headmaster Gopinath Dash the guest of honour.

In the beginning, Sasanka Kumar Behera, an AYOS student, captivated the audience by his extraordinary performance of yogasanas.

Gopinath Dash said, “I have established a Senior Citizens’ Foundation in my village and am teaching them asanas and pranayamas to fight geriatric health problems. Now, almost all of them are feeling relieved from most of the ailments they were suffering earlier and are enjoying a joyful old age.”

Another speaker, Satyananda Jena (62) said, “I was suffering from fistula and was advised by doctors to go for a surgery which might not be successful and the disease might recur. But to my utter surprise, it was completely cured by a few yogic practices advised by a Sannyasi. I have experienced a miracle with yoga in my life.”

Dr Pratima Sadangi, Reader, BJB College, said, “I was suffering from piles. By the practice of yoga, I have experienced permanent relief from the painful disease.”

Arun Kumar Upadhyaya said, “If I am alive, it is because of the practice of yoga. I have confronted great health problems throughout my life but have come out of those because of the regular practice of yoga. Practice of transcendental meditation improved my concentration to such a degree that I appeared at MA examination in Mathematics by preparing for only a few days but passed with excellent marks.”

Dr Indulata Das said yoga is not limited to a few asanas and pranayamas. It is a great spiritual science.

A spiritual life is the real life. Spiritual enlightenment in a human being leads him in the right direction throughout his life. “During my early life, I had discovered the ray of spirituality in me. That slim ray has shown me the right path in the ups and downs of my life. I have always strived to be a good woman rather than be a great woman.”
