Huge quantities of explosives were seized from a crusher unit of a private road construction company in Malkangiri district on Tuesday.

As diected by Malkangiri SP Akhileswar Singh, a police team led by Malkangiri PS IIC Fram Kiro conducted the raid at the crusher unit near MV-7 village and seized gelatine, nitrogen, booster, detonator and other explosive materials.

Though the licence of the crusher unit expired about four months ago, the illegal explosives were stored in the unit, Kiro said. A few months ago, huge quantities of explosives were also seized from another construction company and its top officials were arrested. It was alleged that the explosives were kept in the unit to be supplied to the Maoists.

Meanwhile, Malkangiri district has been cut off from the rest of the world as road communications has neen totally disrupted for the last two days as the Maoists are observing Sahid Saptah (Martyrs' Week) starting from Monday.

The ultras hoisted flags, festoons against police personnel at different places of the district as part of their programme. Even shops and other business establishments in Kalimela, Motu, Chitrakonda and other areas of the district have downed their shutters fearing Maoist attack.
