Host of Brahmapur town projects gathering dust

Prasant Das

Though many projects have been proposed for the development of Brahmapur city, many of them have not been implemented.

In order to tackle the traffic problem of the city, there has been a proposal for constructing a ring road of 38 km. But, there has not been much headway in the project though four years have passed. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared, but owing to various reasons, it has not been approved yet. Similarly, land acquisition for a bypass road has been delayed.

Much-awaited Rangeilunda air strip expansion project also has been in the cold storage for a long time now. Several DPRs have been prepared and one of them has been approved, but still the funds for the project have not been sanctioned. Strangely, none in the district administration has a clue as regards when the expansion work would start.

Bureaucratic hurdles have also delayed the beautification works of three ponds of the town for which proposals have been made long back. The Rs8 crore beautification project for Ramlingam pond has been approved and even Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has laid the foundation stone for the project. Consultant for the project has been appointed and the DPR has been sent for experts’ approval. Notwithstanding all this, the project has not taken off as yet. On the contrary, the pond is being used for a car parking place.

Post- Phailin reconstruction works under ODRP have also not been taken up as per the proposed projects for city road beautification, drainage master plan and drain construction. A water supply project at a cost of Rs40 crore in the town is also pending. All in all, a garbage management plant proposal for the city is also gathering dust.
