PNS

In an apparent case of honour killing, a 20-year-old girl and her 22-year-old boyfriend were killed allegedly by her brothers here on Sunday, just hours before she was to be married off to the man chosen by her family.

The family of the girl, Mami Nayak, had organised a dinner on Saturday night ahead of her marriage in which her boyfriend Amar Nayak and his family were also invited. The girl, unwilling to marry the person chosen by her family, fled with her friend to his house around midnight after the feast.

Following this, two bothers of the girl along with a relative reached the boy’s house at Haladiapadar on the outskirts of the city and asked her return, but she refused to oblige them. Enraged over the girl’s refusal, her relatives allegedly killed her and her boyfriend with sharp weapons inside the house in the presence of the boy’s widowed mother, the police said.

Their bodies, which were in a pool of blood, were recovered by the police on Sunday morning. Brahmapur Superintendent of Police AK Singh said the accused were absconding. The girl’s father was detained and investigation was in progress.
