Hijras demand quota in lS, RS, Assembly seats

PNS

The All Odisha Eunuch Association on Monday demanded that the Election Commission of India and the State Chief Electoral Officer for reservation of seats for eunuchs (Hijras) for lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and State Assembly.

Though the Government has made the special ‘Others’ category for the Hijras, they are still deprived of the privilege to contest the elections, lamented association president Pratap Sahoo. Besides, the election authorities had rejected their nomination papers for the last municipality elections, rued Sahoo.

like the reservation facilities for women, SC, ST and OBC people, the Government should ensure a three-per cent reservation to the persons coming under the ‘Others’ category, added Sahoo. The association has sent letters to the Central and State election authorities and heads of every political party in this regard, informed Sahoo through a Press release. The association would launch a campaign against chiefs of various political parties during the ensuing elections if its demand is not considered favourably, he said.
