The heat wave continued unabated in the State on Tuesday with the mercury hovering above 40 degree Celsius in as many as 13 places.
The maximum day temperature, especially in western Odisha, shot up significantly forcing people to stay indoors.
Sambalpur was the hottest place recording a maximum temperature of 45 degree.
It was followed by Hirakud with 42.5 degree, Jharsuguda 44.2 degree, Sundargarh 41 degree, Balangir 41.8 degree, Bhawanipatna 40.6 degree, Titlagarh 43.4 degree, Malkangiri 40.2 degree and Sonepur 44 degree.
Bhubaneswar also witnessed a significant rise in day temperature as it recorded 40.3 degree against 37.8 degree on Monday. Cuttack recorded 39.8 degree.
As people have been waiting for the arrival of monsoon to get relief from the heat wave, the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) of the SOA University on Tuesday forecasted that the heat wave conditions are likely to continue in interior parts till June 13 while the southwest monsoon’s arrival is expected in the State by June 16.
Pre-monsoon showers are expected from June 14 while the monsoon could cover the entire State by June 19 or 20, the CEC said.
Heat wave conditions, it said, would continue in coastal Odisha till June 12, after which the temperature might decrease. However, the conditions would support thundershowers and drag the monsoon current towards the landmass.
