A school headmistress and her daughter were arrested and forwarded to court on Monday evening allegedly for torturing her daughter-in-law in the district here.

Sources said one Jatindra Gokhar of Salepali village under the Dharuadih police station had married one Ranjita of Brundamal village of Jharsuguda. Ranjita had given birth to one baby girl.

After the birth of the girl, Ranjita’s in-laws had been allegedly torturing her regularly. On November 19, 2013, Ranjita’s husband Jatindra, mother-in-law Sabitri and her two sisters-in-law (husband’s sisters) Draupadi and Tapaswani allegedly had beaten Ranjita severely, following which she was critically injured and had been admitted in a nursing home.

Due to the severe assault, Ranjita’s second child in womb was aborted. After the incident, Ranjita started living at her parent’s house, but her husband and in-laws again took her to their house.

However, they continued to torture her. As the matter reached at the end of her tether, Ranjita lodged a FIR in Dharuadih police station against her husband Jatindra, mother-in-law Sabitri, sisters-in-law Draupadi and Tapaswini.

Acting on the FIR, on Monday evening police arrested mother-in-law Sabitri and sister-in-law Tapaswini and forwarded them to court. Jatindra and his sister Draupadi were absconding. Significantly, Tapaswini works as the headmistress in Kanika Upper primary school.
