Governor SC Jamir on Friday laid emphasis on community participation for mibilisation and wider awareness on the importance of voluntary blood donation.
While addressing a function to mark the World Blood Donor Day here, Dr Jamir said, “Due to the increasing population the requirement
of blood is also increasing, so voluntary blood collection should be increased proportionately.”
The event was organised by the Indian Red Cross Society, State Branch (IRCS, OSB), in collaboration with the State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC), OSACS, NRHM, Khurda district and regional Red Cross branches.
“This year’s theme is ‘Give the gift of life: Donate blood’ which reinforces the urgent need of more and more people all over the world to become lifesavers and public health role models by volunteering to donate blood regularly,” said IRCS, OSB secretary Dr Mangala Prasad Mohanty.
Attending the event, SBTC director Dr Rajalaxmi Mohanty focused on various initiatives taken by the Government in the State in the blood transfusion sector.
On the occasion, as many as 41 regular voluntary unpaid blood donors from each Red Cross Blood Bank of the State, who had donated highest units of blood in the year 2012, were felicitated.
Earlier in the day, a human chain was formed from the AG Square to the PMG Square and a signature campaign too was organised to create wider awareness on the importance of voluntary blood donation.
Similarly, a voluntary blood donation camp was organised at the Red Cross Blood Bank, Capital Hospital, where a total of 22 units of blood were collected.
