Guardians want college polls cancelled

Against the backdrop of student’s unrest in Alaka Mohavidyalaya under Biridi block, many guardians on Friday approached the Principal to cancel the elections to the students union. But the college authority has decided to conduct the poll.

Reports said that after filing of nominations and withdrawal of nomination papers completed on Wednesday, tensions gripped the campus. Bombs were hurled at the boundary wall of college two days ago.

A team of guardians led by Alok Panda, Ramakanta Bhoi, and Naresh Kumar Ojha on Friday met the Principal and submitted a memorandum.

Acting on the guardian’s request, the Principal convened a staff committee meeting on Saturday and discussed the matter. Later, however, it was unanimously resolved to hold the elections.

Principal Banamali Behera informed that the staff committee resolution was forwarded to the Sub Collector, Jagatsinghpur, who is the administrator of college management committee for seeking action.

Sub Collector Mahendra Pratap Mohanty said, “We are closely watching the situation and have warned students to maintain peace in campus, lest the election would be cancelled.”
