PNS

A 23-year-old foreigner woman, a first-time India visitor, has been robbed near Rourkela while travelling in a train to Jharsuguda.

Irene Howda, a Greek national travelling from Howdah in the Azad Hind Express to attend the wedding ceremony of her friend Dr Jitesh Sharma, was robbed of valuables worth more than Rs one lakh from her 2nd AC compartment on Sunday.

When the train was near Rourkela during early morning, some miscreants entered the bogie and made off with her luggage. Irene has complained that her passport, two mobile phones, tablets, a camera, a debit card, Indian and foreign currencies and other articles were stolen from her.

Irene travelled again back to Rourkela accompanied by her friend’s father Dr Devashlok Mishra and lodged a complaint at a local police station. Railway police have registered a case and started investigating the crime.

The railway police’s primary investigations of scrutinising the CCTV footage have not found any clues for the robbery, which took place between 3:15 am and 4:30 am.  A few months ago, a family travelling by train from Jharsuguda to Kolkata had been looted of jewellery and valuables worth `48 lakh.
