G'pati woman, newborn die, docs' 'negligence' alleged

A woman and her newborn baby have allegedly died due to doctors’ negligence in two Government hospitals in Gajapati district. According to information, Balamukunda Bhuyan of Putar village under Raigad block had rushed his pregnant wife, Subhadra, to Raigad hospital following frequent labour pains on April 11. Subhadra delivered a child there and continued to bleed profusely. The child died a few hours after the birth on the same day.

As Subhadra’s condition deteriorated, doctors referred her to the Gajapati District Headquarters Hospital here. Subhadra died in the DHH in the afternoon on the same day.

Alleging that his wife and newborn child died due to negligence of doctors in both the hospitals, Balmukunda has demanded an independent inquiry into their deaths. When contacted, Gajapati CDMO Dr Narendra Mohan Jena said no neglect had been meted out to the woman and her newborn at either hospitals.

“Doctors at Raigad hospital during examinations marked complexity in Subhadra’s womb and thence advised her family members to take her to the DHH. But her husband didn’t go by their advice and insisted that Subhadra be treated there only. The child died due to complexity in birth and the mother could not be saved too,” said Dr Jena.
