The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) organised a State-level seminar on “Odisha Higher Education — Its problems and solutions” at its State office here on Sunday.

Inaugurating the seminar, former Regional Director of Higher Education KP Mohapatra said the Government is responsible for the degradation of education. He emphasised on separation of Plus-II from Plus-III in the colleges.

He also rued the lack of good governance in the educational institutions. Problems generally arise at the time of choice of subjects, research and other administrative works, he said. At the time of appointment of Principals and Vice-Chancellors, work experience, administrative skill should be taken into consideration, he added.

He questioned whether seniority should be a major parameter for selection of college administrators.

Mohapatra also suggested changing the OMR admission system in view of its complications. Fundamentals of all the subjects should be taught properly to the students, he added.

Attending as guest, former Principal Dr Niranjan Satapathy dwelt on proper use of funds. Funds should be used for research in the universities. He also discussed about the funding from RMSA, RUSA and UGC.

Giving his keynote address, ABVP national vice-president Prashant Kumar Rout spoke about the objective of the programme.

He also referred to the State’s universities’ problems like vacant posts of lecturers and degradation of quality education, etc. Former Principal Ashok Nanda and ABVP State president Dillip Kumar Das also spoke, among others.

“We will make a draft proposal of the seminar and submit it to the State Government,” said ABVP State secretary Avilash Panda.ABVP city unit president Dr Gargee Banarjee presided over the meeting.
