Govt plans new regulations for private colleges in State

PNS

In view of the poor performance of the students in a large number of private colleges in the State, the Government has decided to formulate a new policy soon to regulate the functioning of these colleges.

After the declaration of the annual Plus Two examination results on Saturday, Higher Education Minister Pradip Kumar Panigrahi said there are hundreds of private colleges in the State where appointments of teachers and staff are being made by the management bodies and that has had negative effect on the teaching quality as well as administration. The condition of the private residential colleges is even worse.

In view of this, the Higher Education Department is considering intervention in the management of these colleges with the formulation of a new policy that would decide the benchmark for appointment of teachers, he said.

Pointing out that there are allegations against some Government and private colleges for not going by the academic calendar of the Government, he said henceforth the department would take stern action against the authorities of the erring colleges if such instances are brought to its notice.

The department would come up with a notification to this effect within a week, he added.

He also assured that there would be no further vacancies in the posts of principals in any Government or private college from this academic session. Henceforth, both the principal and the teaching staff of a college would be held responsible for the poor results, he said.

Dr Panigrahi also informed that a decision has been taken to effect some changes in the existing syllabus while a new pattern of evaluation would be introduced for the examinations to be held in 2014-15.
