In a shocking incident, a night watchman was shot dead by an unidentified youth in Jagatsinghpur district on Saturday morning.
According to eyewitnesses, the deceased Somnath Das, who was working as a contractual night watchman at the office of the Executive Engineer, Rural Development, had come to the office at Tirtol-Manijanga Narua Chhak at about 7.30 am from his native village Chadra. Das was about to perform puja when unidentified assailants who came by two bikes opened four to five rounds of fire at him from pointblank range with four bullets hitting his chest. The other staffs, who came to the office for morning duty, found Das lying in a pool of blood inside the grill of the office.
Following information, police came to the spot and rushed Das to the District Headquarters Hospital by an ambulance. But the doctors pronounced him as brought dead. While the exact cause of the murder was not immediately known, sources in the locality said that Das had a tiff with some contractors four days ago. Meanwhile, police are examining the footage from two CCTVs placed at the entrance door of the office.
