The Gopalpur Port has commenced commercial operation as an all-weather port on a trial basis.
On Sunday, the port shipped 7,500 metric tonnes of illemenite produced by the Odisha Sands Complex (OSCOM), a unit of the Indian Rare Earths limited (IREl) through a South Korean vessel, Panama. It may be noted that the port operation was stopped since 2010 for its upgradation to an all-weather port. Now, there is a multipurpose berth constructed with a capacity to handle 3.50 million tonnes of cargo. Two more berths would be added very soon to handle more cargoes, said port sources.
