Good Friday marks prayer, penance across State

PNS

Christians across State observed Good Friday, commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, with prayers, fasting and processions.

Security arrangements were tightened, particularly in Christian dominated areas, to maintain law and order. Believers started their day with fasting and visited churches to offer prayers. Some even fasted for about 40 days before Good Friday in keeping with their tradition during the season of lent. The Catholic Church treats Good Friday as a day of fasting as devotees spend the day in penance and prayers.

“Today, it marks the death of Jesus Christ on the cross for the salvation of mankind. Despite being God, he sacrificed his life for us. He is the perfect example of humanity,” said a follower Joseph Sebastian in Bhubaneswar.

The day calls upon the Christians to reflect on their deeds and prepare for the Easter, which is when Jesus resurrected from the death three days after he was crucified.

Mass is celebrated with Jesus’ journey from his arrest to his torture to his crucifixion, being read out during the ceremony.

Christians on this day chose to be subdued and in a solemn and spiritual frame of mind, especially after 3 pm which was when Jesus breathed his last.
