The International Model United Nations (IMUN) of the KIIT University was inaugurated on October 17 last in its campus here.India TV chairman Rajat Sharma graced the occasion on the second day.

Attending an interactive session, he said, “I heard about KIIT, KISS and Dr Achyuta Samanta. After visiting KIIT and KISS, my concept has changed. It is hard to believe that Samanta, whose efforts made this a success, was poorer than me in his childhood.” He urged the youths to follow Samanta’s foot print.

On a question regarding him, Sharma expressed his struggling life. He said his childhood was very pathetic. His parents had no money to feed their ten-member family. They all lived in a very small room in Delhi. He had studied under the street light of nearby railway station. “But hard work and god’s blessings have made me a successful man as you see me today,” Sharma said.

KIIT IMUN secretary general Harsil Rupani moderated the session. Earlier while inaugurating IMUN, Director, United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), New Delhi Kiran Mehra Kerpelman said, “The United Nations has been established with the motto to bring peace and development around the globe. The UN is going to complete 70 years of its meaningful existence and its activities have increased manifold over the years.”

She informed Model United Nations is one of the most effective ways to engage youths in UN activities, adding that the UNIC patronizes and provides all the help to MUNs. MUN is the best platform to learn, research, speak, make opinion and negotiate, Kerpelman said. It teaches cooperation and skills to deal with people that will help youths in the future, she said.

Being organized in association with the United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan, New Delhi, it is one of the largest of its kind in Asia. More than 1,500 delegates from reputed institutions of the country like IITs, NITs, National law Schools, JNU, etc are participating. KIIT-IMUN also attracted 40 delegates from 20 foreign countries like Russia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Bangladesh and Bhutan.
