Gift parcel blast: Punjilal bail plea rejected

PNS

Balangir Additional District and Sessions Judge Anita Sahu on Friday rejected the bail plea of Punjilal Meher, the  alleged lone mind behind the sensational Patnagarh parcel bomb explosion that killed newly married techie Soumya Sekhar Sahu, his grandmother Jemamani and left his wife Reemarani grievously injured on February 23.

On Thursday, the court had completed the hearing on the bail plea of Punjilal and reserved its verdict.

However, Meher’s lawyer Srimat Kumar Panigrahi said his client would move the higher court “for justice”.

Panigrahi said, “The bail petition of Punjilal was rejected by the Additional and Sessions Judge  Since the investigation is on into the parcel bomb blast case, the court felt that bail could not be granted at this stage. We will move the High Court for bail.”

Notably, after his bail application was rejected by the Patnagarh SDJM court, Punjilal had moved the ADJ Court here.

The Patnagarh police initially investigated the case for a month and later handed it over to the Crime Branch for investigation. The investigating agency after probing the case found Punjilal, who was working as English lecturer at the Jyoti Vikash Junior College in Bhainsa, as the sole accused and arrested him.
