Ganjam debt-ridden farmer ends life

PNS

Yet another debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide in Ganjam district on Wednesday by consuming poison due to crop loss and loan burden.

He was identified as Sanyasi Swain, a native of Tankachhai village under Purusottampur block.

Swain, according to his family members, had consumed poison on Tuesday evening due to crop loss and loan burden. He succumbed while undergoing treatment at MKCG Medical College Hospital here in the afternoon.

Swain’s family members alleged that he was under severe mental stress after his standing crops got damaged in Cyclone Titli and subsequent floods in October.

The farmer believed he would not be able to repay the loan, which forced him to take the extreme step, a fellow villager said. However, the officials are yet to comment on the incident.
