A police team was attacked by gamblers at Khanjapadia Street in Lochapada under the Sadar police station in the city late on Friday night when the cops had gone there to conduct a raid on a gambling den.
A Sadar PS Sub-Inspector Bibhuti was injured in the attack.
Acting on inputs, police conducted the raid. Spotting the cops, the gamblers, instead of fleeing from the spot, attacked them. One of them also bit SI Bibhuti.
Besides, the miscreants damaged the police vehicle during the faceoff. But the police personnel eventually overpowered the gamblers and arrested 11 persons.
“We seized Rs 8,000 in cash from their possession; and further investigation is on in this connection,” said police.
It may be mentioned that gambling is considered as part of celebrations at several places across Ganjam district from the Durga Puja till Kumar Purnima; and taking advantage of it, anti-socials become more active during the period.
