AS per the direction of the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC), the State Government has provided compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 1 lakh to two tribals, Hari Majhi and Hube Majhi of Khaliapada village under the Komna police station in the district who had sustained bullet injuries on January 8, 2013 allegedly being fired by the CRPF jawans.
The district Superintendent of Police Umashankar Dash handed over the cheques to the victims at the district police headquarters. Meanwhile, they too were provided with houses under Mo Kudia scheme.
lawyer and human rights activist Biswapriya Kanungo had filed a petition in the OHRC seeking justice for Hube and Hari. “Violation of human rights appears tell tale in the facts and circumstance of this case. Independent of the question, whether suspected Maoists inflicted injury or not, where the injuries could not have been self-inflicted, the State and its law enforcing agencies working on its behalf are liable to make good the sufferance of the innocent tribals” the Commission had observed. Unfortunately, both the victims are yet to be included in the BPl list despite the direction of the Commission.
