Eight pairs of couples tied their nuptial knot here in a mass marriage ceremony which was organised by former local MP Rabindra Kumar Jena and his spouse, Subasini Jena.Subasini is a social activist and Editor of a monthly feature magazine Rebati. The Jena couple did it as a part of their philanthropic activities.
The wedding was hosted mainly for the eligible pairs who otherwise faced financial constraints. The candidates hail from Baleswar as well as neighbouring Mayurbhanj and Bhadrak districts.
A large number of people from various walks of life participated in the event despite agitation call by the Congress. “For the first time the mass marriage initiative was taken up for the financially distressed ones. It is a small effort to bail out the parents who have faced blows of the Corona crisis.
In the coming years, more such programmes would be taken up,” said former MP Jena.
