PNS

The Commissionerate Police on Tuesday arrested an engineering student on charges of raping a 33-year-old woman, mother of two children, in the city.

The youth was identified as Sandeep Kumar Dalai of Jagannathpada under the Kesinga Police Station limits in Kalahandi district. He is a student of a city-based engineering college.

Dalai was the neighbour of the woman at Punjabi Colony in Satyanagar area of the city. He had very good relation with the latter. On January 3 last year, he had taken nude photo of the woman and had started blackmailing her to keep physical relation with him.

On the very next day, the woman agreed with Dalai’s proposal to go to Puri to make a night halt there. The duo stayed in a lodge in Puri for two days and then returned to the capital, but the woman didn’t return to her husband’s house and stayed with Dalai for nine months at lingipur in the city.

During their live-in relationship period, the woman had allegedly aborted her child due to Dalai’s pressure. She also alleged that the youth had harassed her physically and mentally.

On August 18 last, the woman alleged that Dalai’s family members had tried to sell her in other State, but she managed to escape from a vehicle where she was being ferried and shouted for help at Xavier Square in the city. The police rescued her and admitted her in the Capital Hospital for treatment.

After getting information, the woman’s husband came to the hospital and took her to his home. On September 7 last, the woman lodged a complaint with the Mahila Police against Dalai for raping her. The police arrested the youth and forwarded him to a local court here.
