A woman was reportedly trampled to death and three houses were damaged by a wild elephant which strayed into the Chunakoli slum adjacent to the boundary wall of Infocity on Sunday evening.
The woman, identified as Chand Besra, was found lying dead near the slum on Monday morning.
Her family members and fellow slum dwellers claimed that she was killed by an elephant that had strayed into their locality from the Chandaka-Dampara sanctuary. They demanded compensation for the victim’s family.
Following information, police and forest officials rushed to the spot and began investigating into the incident.
“Payment of compensation can be made only after postmortem on the body is conducted and the report confirms that the death was caused by an elephant. There has to be a police case registered in the matter as well,” said Bhubaneswar Forest Range Officer Girish Satpathy.
