PNS

A herd of eight elephants have wreaked havoc in villages under Gumma block by destroying paddy and vegetable cultivations for the last four days, forcing people to spend sleepless nights.

Villagers said that the herd has been moving in Jiba, Jami, Parasomba area in Gumma block and destroying vegetables and corn cultivations. “We have not slept for three days for the presence of elephants,” they said.

However, the DFO said all possible steps have been initiated to drive away the jumbos. Two special squads have been engaged to ensure safety of the villagers, he said.

The herd comprised three male elephants, four female elephants and a cub.”

It might be mentioned here that the same herd had sneaked into Gosani block of Gajapati district in May 2017 and caused massive crop damage.

The locals have demanded that the elephants be drove away to distant jungles.
