Edu institutions asked to follow safety guidelines

Safety is the topmost priority for all and it’s a fundamental right. But most educational institutions in the State are neglecting this aspect.

As per Common Minimum Standard (CMS) guideline each institution must hire an Assistant Engineer and acquire a safety certificate every year regularly. If there is unsafe building then it must be taken seriously and appropriate action initiated.

local RTI activist and co-convenor of Soochana Kranti Forum Deba Prasad Sahoo said that it is revealed from Talcher Auto College data that authorities are not following the safety guidelines. This institution is recognised by UGC and recently a NAAC team visited for reaccreditation. But unfortunately students are deprived from basic facilities.

later, Sahoo in a petition to the Chief Minister requested him for immediate action. The CM’s Office (CMO) took the matter seriously and ordered RDE Bhubaneswar to inquire.

Following which  RDE ordered all 211 Sanskrit colleges, 1,630 Junior colleges, 822 Degree colleges, 29 Autonomous colleges and 94 Government colleges of the State to submit compliance report along with safety certificates within 20 days.

Recently RDE ordered the Talcher Autonomous College Principal to demolish old class rooms within 15days. After this verdict from RDE, the Talcher college authorities were forced to sanction funds for construction of new class rooms.

Sahoo further alleged that a huge portion of the development funds are being paid as teacher’s salary for which since last so many years no development work was initiated for students.

From a reliable source it came to notice that authorities are planning to spend all funds towards teacher’s EPF payment after which not single pie will be available for development. RDE has also ordered for proper utilisation of funds.   Students of this college and members of civil society have appreciated Sahoo’s hard work.
