Drying Mahanadi vexing issue for farmers of Odisha, C'garh

RAJ KUMAR SHARMA

With summer season set to come after two months, the Mahanadi river position has begun to raise concern.

Although back water of Hirakud reservoir is stretched upto border village Sukhojoda, the river bed has dried up. In this backdrop, some local farmers have started their cultivation. The political scenario was bitter in the State with Mahanadi during 2018.

The then BJP led Raman Singh Government of Chhattisgarh was severely crticised by both BJD , Congress and other organisations in Odisha on Mahanadi water context. But, after 2019 election nobody is giving importance to  this issue anymore as if Mahanadi water intake system is settled once for all.Sources said that now Mahanadi water source is going down slowly. While on the one hand, Mahanadi water is plentily available in Chhattisgarh,  the situation is reverse as a great patch is going to be a desert in Odisha.

The water of Chhattisgarh Kalma barrage is not allowed to enter in Odisha. Now, 66 gates of Kalma barrage built over Mahanadi river have become barriers in flowing of Mahanadi water into Odisha State. Villagers in lower catchment areas in Odisha allege that they have been suffering a lot since last five years.

The Chhattisgarh Government has totally forgotten common problems for the sake of industrialisation. The position of Chhattisgarh farmers under the barrage is also very critical.  The villagers allege stoppage of Rabi crops since last four years in Trivona village under Pushor block here with drying of ground water source alongwith river water.

As a result, all tube wells are not working. Building barrage at Lakha of Kalo river, the Chhattisgarh Government is providing water to a major industry at Raigarh with no water to village for raising crops and other usage.

Resentment of villagers is rising at Jharmunda, Kundatarai, Odar, Bhatli, Kusmuda, Tadal and Pusor villages of Chhattisgarh. They are supporting the cause of Odisha farmers in "Mahandi Bachao Aviyan".
