A youth, Manoj Biswal, allegedly killed his mother following an altercation over money at Ghantapada village under the Colliery police station in Angul district on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Julie (62).
Sources said a quarrel ensued between Manoj and his mother on Friday night after the latter refused to give him money to buy drugs.
Livid with rage after being denied money, Manoj attacked his mother with a sharp weapon. Though she was rushed to the local hospital, she succumbed to the injuries.
Getting information, a team of Colliery police station rushed and detained the accused after a preliminary probe. The body was sent to a hospital for postmortem.
On Thursday, a similar incident rocked Upar Barada village in Keonjhar district. A minor boy allegedly hacked his widowed mother to death with an axe after she refused to give him money to buy clothes.
