Don't harass people lacking ID proofs: Govt tells banks

PNS

In the wake of people being panicked due to the sudden demonetisation of `500 and `1,000 notes, Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi on Wednesday asked the banks not to return people visiting their branches for exchange even if they don’t posses Xerox copies of identity proofs.

The Chief Secretary advised the bank authorities to ensure that people should not be deprived of exchanging old notes with new ones for mere reason of lack of photocopies of ID proofs.

He suggested them to just write down the number of the ID proofs whichever they have and exchange their notes.

Padhi also held talks with all district Collectors and SPs through videoconferencing to make people aware not to be panic and asked the SPs to maintain law and order in banks, petrol pumps and other places where the exchange of old currencies are valid.

Finance Secretary Tuhinikanta Pandey also held discussions with RBI, SBI authorities and Chief Post Master General, Odisha Circle regarding easy availability of new notes in adequate numbers.

Meanwhile, the RBI Bhubaneswar Regional Office has opened help desk for queries relating to `500 and `1000 notes. People can call to 0674-2396916 for clarification.
