Architecture is called the mother of Mother Earth.” With this observation, Associate Professor of Architecture Shilpa Sharma Chogle began her presentation on the topic “Teaching of Architecture” at the 169th ‘Meet the Artist’s programme’ at the Jatin Das Centre of Art (JDCA) premises here on Saturday.
Chogle explained the traditional architecture to modern architecture in her talk. Now, architects design malls and film halls in the Western style, but they should not forget the Indian traditional architecture, which has its distinct style and beauty. She also discussed Kutchhi homes in Kutch district of Gujarat, Assami homes, traditional Kerala architecture and Pahadi architecture. She showcased and analysed India’s temple architecture and sculptures.
Giving information about the architecture colleges in India, Chogle expressed her concern that most of these colleges are still running under technical colleges while only a few are running independently.
Chogle is presently doing her PHD in Architecture in the Nagpur University. She has also learned pottery in New Delhi and runs interior and architecture projects.
In his welcome address, JDCA chairman Jatin Das introduced Chogle and spoke about the JDCA and the purpose of organising the programme, Meet the Artist. The JDCA was established in 1997 in the city for conservation and promotion of traditional and contemporary visual arts, he informed. The programme Meet the Artist was started in September 2001 to meet the artists directly and to be familiar with the presentations made by traditional and contemporary artists, craft persons and scholars in the field of visual arts, he added.
