Dogs tied with reflectors to check night mishaps

The Animal Welfare Trust ‘Ekamra’ has started a campaign named ‘Illuminating lives’, an initiative to illuminate or make animals visible even in the dark so that accidents can be drastically reduced in Bhubaneswar.

At night due to lack of visibility, it becomes extremely difficult to spot animals from a certain distance. Spotting the animals too closely results in sudden braking causing accidents. Such accidents not only harm animals severely but also injure the people involved apart from causing property loss.

The trust had been receiving numerous cases every month and the easiest way to tackle this problem is making animals visible by tying reflective collars on animals, by which the reflective collars would pick up light from vehicles and other sources and shine as per the road sign boards so that the drivers can have enough time to react accordingly.

The trust has started the first phase of the campaign by tying such collars on street dogs. Meanwhile, a track would be kept to see how well this strategy serves its purpose. later, after the results, the next phase would be carried out in which these collars would be tied on cattle.

The trust has planned to increase the stock gradually in order to equip maximum animals with the reflective collars.
