Doc cuts woman's food pipe: NHRC notice to Govt

PNS

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action-taken report (ATR) from the Health and Family Welfare Secretary over a serious negligence at a sterilisation camp in Rayagada, where a surgeon slashed the oesophagus (food pipe) of the patient during surgery at a Community Health Centre (CHC) within four weeks.

The commission passed the acting on a complaint filed by human rights activist Akhand, who had prayed to the commission for an impartial inquiry into the matter and compensation for the victim. The mishap had taken place at the Ramanaguda Community Health Centre on December 27, 2014 and the patient was identified as Sarita Padhi of limapadar village under Gunupur block of Rayagada district.

Sarita, along with four others, had visited the Ramanaguda Community Health Centre along with an ‘Asha Worker’ to get the surgery done. However, the doctor, while doing the surgery, erroneously slashed the food pipe following which she was shifted to the private hospital in Vizag.
