In another instance of police excess, a doctor suffered head injuries after a policeman allegedly thrashed him severely during helmet-checking on Sunday in Angul town.

The victim identified as Dr Kamalakant Jena was intercepted by a cop at Police Station Square and beaten up for not wearing a helmet. The injured doctor was rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH), where he is posted currently.

Sources said Dr Jena, who was in a hurry to attend to patients at the DHH on Sunday morning, became the target of police fury when the cop found him without a helmet.

“I admit that I had committed a mistake for not wearing helmet while riding the vehicle on the road. But it does not mean that the cops would abuse and assault people,” said Jena.

“When I was stopped on the road during helmet checking, I went to the cops and paid Rs 100 as fine for not wearing helmet. However, the cop abused me, snatched my gold chain from neck and started beating me with a lathi mercilessly,” Dr Jena alleged.

He said he will file an FIR demanding strong action against the policeman, who assaulted him on the pretext of duty.
