DNA report ends MKCG baby swap row

PNS

The baby swap issue, which had put the MKCG Medical College Hospital authorities in jitters, was finally resolved on Monday following the receipt of DNA test reports.

Acting on the report, the medical authorities handed over the girl child to her original father Anil Biswasray and mother Priyadarsini of Hinjilicut area in Ganjam district on Monday. It also confirmed that the dead child, which had been given to Biswasray couple earlier, was the child of Sibaram Basantia and Sunita Basantia of Purusottampur block.

The report proved the negligence of the medical authorities in this case. The Medical Superintendent Ashok Behera said departmental proceedings would be initiated against the nurse and three junior doctors who were in the charge of the delivery cases.

Notably, the baby swapping case first came to light when the Basantia couple made a complaint that they had been given a girl when the hospital records say they had a baby boy.

later the Biswasray couple filed an FIR at the BN Pur police station that their baby girl had been replaced with another baby who died due to premature delivery.

As per the records, two premature babies were born on February 20 and 21 at the hospital and they were kept at one station in the Special New Born Care Unit (SNCU). Both were girls as per the records. One of them died on February 25 and was handed over to the Biswasray couple while the other was kept at the SNCU. As the couple buried the body without checking its gender, they were not sure of the gender of the baby.

Things turned complicated after the police found that the buried baby was a boy. later the DNA samples of the girl, dead boy and of both the couples were sent to the State Forensic laboratory for DNA test.
