Devices in buildings, street-lights to save energy

PNS

In a move to conserve energy to meet the supply and demand gap, the State Government has decided to install energy efficiency devices in Government buildings and street lighting systems.

A study conducted by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Union Ministry of Power, has indicated that there is substantial energy saving potential (minimum 20 per cent) in different sectors of the State, including agriculture and water supply and street lighting in the urban areas, etc.

“Energy audits conducted so far have shown enormous energy conservation potential which can be realised through implementation of energy efficiency projects and programmes. It is felt that all the office buildings, colony street lighting and new buildings under the GRIDCO/GPTCl must have substantial energy saving potential like other Government buildings,” said Energy Secretary PK Jena in a letter to CMD of Gridco and OPTCl.

In another letter to Science and Technology Secretary, Jena asked to instal energy saving lED lamps and solar street lights in 30 urban local bodies (UlBs) across the State.   “The street lighting of remote areas done through solar energy by S&T department has substantial energy potential. You may take one UlB in one district and demonstrate the energy saving potential which will be an eye opener to many,” said Jena.

It is to be noted that the Energy department with the help and guidance of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Union Ministry of Power, provides financial as well as technical assistance starting from energy audit to installation of energy efficiency devices.
