The demand for recognition of Kudmali as an official language and for its inclusion in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution is gradually gaining momentum.
Recently, a delegation of the Regional Institute of Jhumar & Educational Cultural Academy led by its president Padmalochan Mohanta and secretary Dhanurjay Mohanta Sankhuar submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in this regard.
Earlier, different pro-Kudmali organisations have raised the same demand in Jharkhand and West Bengal also and submitted memoranda to this effect to the Chief Ministers of the two states.
About a crore people of Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal speak the Kudmali language, it is claimed. People belonging chiefly to the Kudmi/Mohanta community speak Kudmali.
