PNS

The city police have arrested Qasim Ali (24), of Nuapada district, for stealing at least 20 finger rings weighing around 100 gram from a city-based jewellery shop last month. The police have seized only six of the stolen rings from his possession and are on the lookout of another accused in this connection.

According to police, Qasim Ali and his accomplice came to the jewellery shop located at Nayasarak here on January 29 pretending to be customers. “While the salesman was busy attending to other customers, the duo hoodwinking him, picked up a box containing at least 20 rings,” said an FIR filed by shop owner Biswanath Dutta.

Investigating into the incident and watching CCTV footages, the police identified the duo. Tracking Qasim, a team of the city’s Purighat police arrested him from his native village in Dhobipada under the Jonk police station of Nuapada district.

Qasim was forwarded to court on Thursday, from where he was remanded to jail custody, police said.
