Expressing concern over the nonrenewal of licences of arms and ammunitions in Cuttack district, District Magistrate NC Mishraon Thursday called upon the police and magistrates to ensure timely renewal of the licenced arms.

At a police-magistrate coordination meeting here, Mishra informed that at least 919 persons in all the 18 police stations of Cuttack (Rural) police district have licenced guns. “But only 407 have renewed their licences this year and there is no information about the remaining 512 persons who are possessing licensed guns,” Mishra informed.

He further disclosed that cracker and fireworks traders are not obtaining the requisite licences from the administration and carrying out their businesses illegally in many rural pockets of the district. Calling upon the policemen and magistrates to launch a massive crackdown on the illegal fireworks traders, the Collector asked the officials to ensure that the trade in crackers and other fireworks are made at specific locations with adequate fire safety measures.

It was revealed at the meeting that not a single cracker trader in Banki and Athagarh sub-divisions has trading licence while only two are authorised to trade in these products in Tigiria. But traders in Cuttack Sadar division obtain regular licences, the meeting was told.

The meeting also discussed about the implementation of the PNDT Act in the district and the participants were asked to conduct regular inspections of ultrasound units in their areas. The doctors posted in different health centres were asked not to leave their headquarters without prior permission. The doctors were also asked to submit the reports of medico-legal cases, particularly of alleged rape incidents, within 24 hours.

The participants were also asked to come down heavily on the sand and quarry mafias. “Ensure stringent action under the provisions of Public Nuisance Act against those who are obstructing public roads by dumping construction materials,” the policemen and magistrates of the district were told.
