Constantly challenged by organised crimes, the Commissionerate police in city have resorted to lethal force like ‘police encounters’ to curb criminal activities. During last six months, the city police resorted to a fourth encounter on Monday night when a dreaded criminal received gunshot injuries after he unsuccessfully tried to escape by opening fire at the police.
“One Kalandi Khuntia of Shankarpur area under the Badambadi police station received gunshot injury in his right leg when Badambadi police inspector made a controlled fire of one round from his service pistol,” informed city DCP Akhileswar Singh on Tuesday, adding that the police retaliated in exercise of right to private defence after the accused opened fire at them.
Kalandi was immediately shifted to the SCB Medical College Hospital, the DCP said and also informed that the police have seized a country-made pistol from his possession. Kalandi was believed to be the mastermind behind a series of bomb blasts that have taken place in and around the Badamabadi bus terminus recently. He was also wanted in two murder cases, police said.
