Criminal case against Katju filed in court

A criminal case was filed against former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju here at the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) Court for making derogatory remarks about the people of Odisha on his Facebook page.

Senior lawyer Ashok Badapanda filed the complaint alleging that his recent Facebook comments amounted to sedition and an act against the State.

Badapanda said there is no meaning of the regret expressed by Katju after committing the crime.

“What does regret means after you commit a crimeIJ If things go like this then there would have no courts. Katju’s regrets do not matter here,” said Badapanda.

On October 10, in his post, Katju had written: “I was asked to write about the Oriyas (Odias). What is there to write about these poor chapsIJ Ever since they got a thrashing at the hands of Ashoka in the battle of Kalinga, they have been a dejected lot. Now all they have with them are a lot of pots (Patras), big pots (Mahapatras) and supposedly intelligent kings (Patnaiks). And of course they have lord Jagannath, to whom they pray every day for revenge on the abominable Biharis.”
