A policeman was suspended for handing over his AK-47 rifle to an unidentified girl at the State-level Republic Day parade at the Mahatma Gandhi Marg here on Saturday.

A Constable of the 6th Battalion, Cuttack, Bhagyadhar Nayak was placed under suspension for violating the police service code of conduct, a senior official said.

The matter came to light after a video of the Constable giving the AK-47 rifle to a girl went viral on social media platforms.

The Constable was deployed for Republic Day celebrations here and incident took place at around 9.30 am at the Mahatma Gandhi Marg.

In the video clip, the constable was seen giving his gun to the girl, whose face was covered with a black stole, and exchanged words before she returned the weapon to the cop. The girl was seen checking the gun for a few seconds.

Soon after the video went viral, Twin City Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty has ordered a probe and subsequently action was taken against the cop in the evening.

However, it is yet to be ascertained under which circumstances the police Constable had handed over his service weapon to the girl.
