Contract teachers' stir today

Before gheraoing the residences of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and School and Mass Education Minister Debi Prasad Mishra on Thursday, the Contract Teachers’ Association on Sunday decided to launch a State-wide stir on Monday by staging demonstrations in front of the offices of all District Education Officers (DEOs).

Odisha Government High School Contract Teachers’ Association (OGHSCTA) president Pradipta Kumar Pradhan said they would gherao the DEOs’ office and submit memorandum to the district Collectors highlighting their grievance.

The teachers are protesting the Government’s decision to cancel the appointment of nearly 4,000 contract teachers.

last week, School and Mass Education Secretary Ranjana Chopra informed the Orissa High Court that the contract teachers’ appointments made after the court’s interim stay order on June 11 would be cancelled.

Association president Pradhan said they have no fault from their side so far as the appointments are concerned.

“The Government had appointed the teachers despite the fact that there was a court stay on it,” he pointed out.
